Who Will Actually Be in the Old Trafford Dugout on 1 January? Reading the Man United Manager Market

bet365 have priced up who will be Manchester United manager on New Year’s Day 2027. Eddie Howe is a 4/6 favourite after Sunday’s 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth — but the way this market is framed matters more than most punters realise.

Our Angle

This is not a “next permanent manager” market. It asks who is in charge on a specific date, nine and a half weeks away. That changes the maths: Michael Carrick surviving (12/1) is a live outcome, and so is a caretaker still holding the fort if a permanent appointment drags on — which is where Darren Fletcher (25/1) and Ruud van Nistelrooy (33/1) come in. Howe’s 4/6 implies a 60% chance that a deal is not only agreed but done, and he’s in the dugout, by New Year’s Day. Check bet365’s rules on how interim appointments are settled before reading too much into any price below the top two.

Current manager — Michael Carrick, permanent since May 2026 (in post at the time of writing)

League position — 16th, 7 points from 8 games — worst start at this stage since 1986/87

Form — Winless in 8 in all competitions; 2 wins from 12 this season

Last two results — Como 4-1 Man Utd (Champions League); Man Utd 0-3 Bournemouth

Next game — Chelsea v Man Utd, Saturday 31 October, 12:30

Market favourite — Eddie Howe 4/6 with bet365

Why Has Howe Shortened So Sharply?

Howe was available at 9/4 across the market before the weekend. By Monday morning he was odds-on. Three things explain the move. He’s been out of work since leaving Newcastle in July, where he secured two Champions League qualifications and the 2025 Carabao Cup. Reports suggest United’s director of football Jason Wilcox favours him. And the Bournemouth defeat, coming days after the Como result, turned the question from “if” Carrick goes to “when”. At 60% implied, the market is treating Howe as the expected outcome rather than merely the leading one.

Is Nagelsmann the Realistic Alternative?

At 5/2 (29%), Julian Nagelsmann is the only other name priced as a serious contender. He left the Germany job in July after the World Cup and, like Howe, could start immediately. Between them, the top two account for nearly 89% of the implied probability before margin is taken into account. Everyone else — Antonio Conte (7/1), Kieran McKenna (9/1) and Unai Emery (10/1) included — is being priced as a fallback rather than a frontrunner. Emery’s case is particularly complicated: Villa have just beaten Manchester City and been cut to 6/1 for the top four, which makes a mid-season move harder to picture.

What Would It Take for Carrick to Still Be There?

His 12/1 implies about an 8% chance. For it to land, United would probably need a result at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, followed by a run that makes the board willing to wait. It’s not impossible — this is the same manager who took over mid-season last year and finished third — but the public disagreement with Bruno Fernandes, and leaving the captain on the bench on Sunday, make a clean reset harder. After the Bournemouth game, Carrick himself said only that the club would have to wait and see.

Does the Calendar Favour an Interim?

United have used caretakers twice in recent years: Ruud van Nistelrooy after Erik ten Hag’s exit in October 2024, and Darren Fletcher after Ruben Amorim’s departure in January 2026. If Carrick leaves this week and a permanent target needs compensation agreeing, or prefers to start in the new year, an interim could still be in charge on 1 January. Fletcher at 25/1 (4%) and Van Nistelrooy at 33/1 (3%) are the market’s nod to that scenario. Whether they would actually settle as winners depends on bet365’s market rules, so read those first.

Who Else Is in the Book?

Gareth Southgate (20/1) has long been associated with the job. Fabian Hürzeler (25/1) has Brighton third in the table, which cuts both ways — impressive enough to attract United, successful enough that Brighton have little reason to let him go. Cesc Fàbregas (40/1) is the Como coach whose side beat United 4-1 last week. Thomas Frank (40/1), Brentford’s Keith Andrews (50/1), Mauricio Pochettino (50/1) and Ole Gunnar Solskjær (50/1) complete the list.

Our Selections

Eddie Howe — 4/6. Available, experienced, and reportedly favoured inside the club. The short price reflects that, and it’s the outcome we think is most likely. Julian Nagelsmann — 5/2. The alternative if United decide on a bolder appointment; a 29% read looks fair for a free agent of his profile. Both are opinions, not guarantees, and this kind of market can turn on a single report.
