From Hogan’s Alley last week, to Jack’s Course this week — it’s a signature event on the cards and that means one thing: each way value. Muirfield Village is a genuinely tricky test; the pros have to plot their way around, as Jack Nicklaus designs his courses with that philosophy at their very heart.
Length is a factor here. At 7,500 yards it ranks among the longer layouts on tour, and ball striking is an absolute must. It requires the full package this week, as Scottie Scheffler’s back-to-back victories here have demonstrated. But we won’t be touching Scottie or Rory — that is not what we are here for.
We are looking for each-way value, and a win would be a huge bonus. It’s all about the bigger picture — making profit and waiting to hit that jackpot. If you had a 100–150 runner horse race, you wouldn’t be backing the 4/1 favourite, right?
The winning score here is often reminiscent of a major — rarely going below the −10 mark. So we are after a grinder: someone who hangs around, keeps bogeys off the card and minimises mistakes.
Cantlay’s record at Muirfield Village speaks for itself — multiple top-30 finishes, numerous top-10s and a win at this very venue. He has been struggling with the putter this season, but the rest of his game is in good shape. At 18/1 he represents the most heavily staked selection of the week.
The form man. The top-25 machine — and rapidly turning into a top-10 machine. He may lack experience around this particular course, but his game is right up there with the best on tour over the past two months. A breakthrough win looks imminent, and 35/1 reflects an opportunity rather than a risk.
Speaking of grinders — this is the main man. In major championships he consistently hangs around contention, and his name regularly gets a mention on Sunday afternoons. He has won at Torrey Pines, an equally difficult and demanding long-course test. Muirfield Village should suit his patient, methodical game right down to the ground.
Reitan is playing fantastic golf right now and already showing the kind of grinding quality we are looking for this week. A maiden win last month followed by a stellar effort at the US PGA Championship makes 80/1 look a huge price for a player full of confidence. A compelling dark horse selection at an attractive price.
