Reds looking for back-to-back wins
Liverpool finally eased some of the pressure with a 2-0 victory away to West Ham at the weekend, but that result only papers over the cracks of a poor title defence. Arne Slot’s side have already suffered six league defeats in 13 – two more than they managed in the whole of last season – and Anfield is no longer the fortress it once was, with four home league losses on the board.
Slot shuffled his pack in London, leaving Mo Salah on the bench, and was rewarded with a sharp display from Florian Wirtz and a first league goal in red for Alexander Isak. Even so, the priority now has to be restoring authority on home soil against a Sunderland side enjoying a dream campaign.
Sunderland dangerous but vulnerable on the road
Regis Le Bris has turned Sunderland into one of the stories of the season. The Black Cats showed tremendous character to come from 2-0 down to beat Bournemouth 3-2 at the weekend, a result that lifted them into sixth place and underlined their belief.
However, their away form remains patchier. Sunderland are unbeaten in seven at home but have taken just seven points from a possible 18 on their travels, even if that sequence does include an eye-catching victory over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. They carry a genuine threat from set pieces and physical forwards, which could trouble a Liverpool defence that has conceded three or more in five of their last eight games in all competitions.
Home win in a lively encounter
History is against Sunderland at Anfield – they are winless in their last 18 league visits – and that run may well be extended, even if this Liverpool team looks fragile. The visitors have enough about them to get on the scoresheet, but Liverpool’s extra quality in the final third can still tilt a high-tempo contest in their favour.
With eight of Liverpool’s 11 home games in all competitions going over 2.5 goals, another goal-laden night on Merseyside is fancied. A 2-1 home win makes plenty of appeal in the correct-score market, backing the Reds to edge a competitive 90 minutes.
Alexander Isak, who opened his league account for Liverpool at the weekend and struck twice against Sunderland the last time he faced them, looks a strong fancy to find the net again.
