So here we are at Colonial Country Club — Hogan’s Alley, as some call it — and “alley” is a very notable word. The course features many narrow holes that reward accuracy off the tee and precise approach play, including the ability to shape the ball both ways. This is not a golf course for out-and-out bombers.
Looking back through recent results, there is a clear trend of certain players’ names repeatedly appearing in the top 20 — and unfortunately, that pattern is already factored into some of the prices available this week.
Jordan Spieth, for instance, has a wonderfully consistent record here with multiple top-10 finishes in recent years. Though not declared this week, he would likely have traded around 12/1 to 14/1 — too short for the value required.
This tournament has a habit of throwing up winners who aren’t the bookmakers’ favourites. Two selections below represent much better value propositions.
Rickie Fowler’s name has a habit of turning up near the top of the leaderboard at Colonial, and the Sunday orange will likely be seen plenty on TV this coming weekend. He is playing some of his best golf of the year and at 20/1 he just about makes the shortlist as the strongest-staked selection of the week.
Hall has a top-3 and a top-6 to his name at this venue in recent years. Slightly on the short side at 35/1 given the historical interest in his price — but his all-round game has improved immensely over the past 12 months and this tournament consistently rewards precisely the kind of player he is becoming. Hard to get away from at a reduced stake.
Finau had a strong week at the Byron Nelson and appears to have found a much better putting stroke than he has shown for the past two or three years — that’s been the missing piece. A first top-10 of the season would be a significant stepping stone. His tournament record at Colonial makes for compelling each-way reading at 55/1.
Grillo ended last week with a top-40 finish, hampered by a stationary moving day, but his all-round game looked in decent enough shape. It is his Colonial record that makes him genuinely compelling at a big price.
