What Are the Odds Really Saying About Champions League Matchday 2?

Eighteen fixtures over two nights, six Premier League clubs in action and one genuine heavyweight meeting at the Etihad. We’ve converted the bet365 match prices into implied probabilities to see where the market is confident — and where it’s sitting on the fence.

Our Angle

Read the prices as percentages and only two ties look like genuine coin-flips: Man City v PSG and Atlético Madrid v Man United. Everywhere else the market has a clear favourite. Our read: that’s where the real uncertainty in this round sits — and where a bet should be sized with the most care, not the most confidence.

Matchday 2 window — Tuesday 13 and Wednesday 14 October

English clubs involved — Arsenal, Man United, Liverpool, Aston Villa, Man City

Tightest market — Atlético v Man United, 11/8 v 13/8

Headline fixture — Man City v PSG, City 23/20, PSG 2/1

Shortest English price — Arsenal, 1/5 at home to Lille

How Do the Prices Translate Into Probabilities?

Divide 1 by the decimal odds and you get the chance a bookmaker is assigning to each outcome. Add the three outcomes together and the total comes to more than 100% — that excess is the bookmaker’s margin, and it’s worth remembering whenever you weigh up whether a price represents value.

Is Man City v PSG Really as Close as It Looks?

Wednesday’s meeting at the Etihad (20:00 UK) is the standout fixture of the round. Both sides won on Matchday 1 — City 2-0 at Porto, holders PSG 6-1 against Slovan Bratislava — and Gianluigi Donnarumma lines up against the club he lifted the trophy with in 2025. City’s 23/20 implies roughly a 47% chance of a home win: marginal favourites, not dominant ones. The last competitive meeting went PSG’s way, 4-2 in Paris in January 2025, so home advantage is doing much of the work in that price.

Why Is the Market So Split on Atlético v Man United?

Tuesday’s trip to Madrid is the tightest-priced fixture on the card, with just four percentage points separating the two sides. The context explains it: Atlético lost 2-1 at Liverpool on Matchday 1, while United opened with a 4-0 home win over Sabah. When a market is this balanced it’s effectively telling you it has no strong view — a useful reminder that a single result in an eight-game league phase carries plenty of randomness.

Where Is the Market Most Confident?

Real Madrid at Roma

Real Madrid beat Inter 2-1 on Matchday 1 and are 10/11 in Rome, a little over 52%. Roma were held 1-1 by Fenerbahçe in Istanbul. Madrid have won the last four meetings between the clubs in this competition (2016 and 2018), which goes some way to explaining the price.

Aston Villa v Fenerbahçe

Villa’s 3-2 win in Bruges has them 7/10 at Villa Park, a 59% read. Fenerbahçe came through qualifying unbeaten and drew with Roma, so they should be well organised, but the market is clear about who it favours.

Arsenal, Liverpool and Barcelona

Arsenal (1/5), Liverpool (3/11) and Barcelona (3/10) are all priced as heavy favourites. Short prices reflect likelihood, not certainty — and they return very little for the risk taken.

Our Selections

Man City to beat PSG — 23/20. A near coin-flip in which we think home advantage tips the balance. Real Madrid to win at Roma — 10/11. The market’s most confident read among the competitive ties. Both are opinions, not guarantees.

Betting Sensibly on Matchday 2

Eighteen fixtures over two nights is a lot of temptation. Whatever you back, decide your total stake in advance, treat each bet as a separate decision rather than piling them into one combined punt, and never chase losses. Deposit limits, time-outs and self-exclusion tools are available at responsiblegambling.bet365.com, and GAMSTOP lets you self-exclude from all UK licensed operators for free.
